Mike Kelley

This arresting explosion of colour has taken our eyes hostage and left them stranded in a surreal field of fireworks...

Deodorized Central Mass with Satellites is just one of many mind-blowing artworks by the late Mike Kelly, who tragically passed away last year. It features bright plush toys, styrofoam and hanging plates all sewn over wood and steel wireframes. It offers a cutting representation of the great American dream expressed through excess consumption, bulk buying and the habit of people collecting ‘things’.

The artwork recently featured in the Mike Kelley retrospective at MoMA PS1, the largest and most comprehensive collection of Kelley’s work to date—consisting of some 270 individual pieces. From all reports it blew everything else in New York right out of the water so we are very sad we missed out on seeing it. We will definitely keep you posted if the exhibition travels to any other cities soon.
