Mr Maria

We’ve found a special collection of lamps that will light up your little one’s life. Whether they love bunnies, bears, elephants or silly little seals, the team from Mr Maria have something to charm the socks off your child this Easter...

We love all of their creations, but our heart belongs to Miffy! Oh how we’d love to see her glowing softly in in our own bedroom once the kids have fallen asleep.

The world of Mr Maria was founded by Jannes Hak and Lennart Bosker in a studio in the heart of Amsterdam. With passion for design and making people smile, the pair spend their day creating some pretty wonderful products for the world.

The team don’t have a clear-cut design philosophy but rather an open-minded view to simply bring out the inner child in everyone: “We don’t make products, we create stars!” says the team.

We asked Jannes and Lennart a few questions about what drives them...
What inspired you to start Mr Maria?
As a child my bedroom characters where very important to me. Their presence gave me a sense of security; they were my brave guardians against the creepy crawlers of the night. But when it became really dark even my trusted companions could turn into their evil twins. In this case a little light had the magical power to chase these phantoms away.

This universal fear of the dark and children’s desire to “please leave a little light on”, sparked the lighting concept for Mr Maria.

What do you love most about designing products for children?
We have one very important philosophy when it comes to our designs, captured in a single word that unites our ideas and gives us clear direction. This word is simply “innocence”. As especially in this day and age we feel very lucky that we have the capability to make so many children happy.

To bring something pure and harmless into this world and give children all over the world a big smile on their faces, is priceless. How many designers can say that their products receive a kiss every evening?

What inspires your designs?
There are a lot of elements in our designs that are inspired by classic stone sculptures. We love the old statues in Amsterdam and when we first started Mr Maria we talked about them a lot and how nice it would be to make them more accessible to a broader audience. Besides art, technology is our main influencer. Complex tools that used to be only accessible for big companies are nowadays, thanks to new digital solutions, in everybody’s reach. P.s. We love animated movies from Pixar to Studio Ghibli.

If you were a kid in Amsterdam, where is the first place you would go?
There is a great climbing forest in the “Amsterdam forest”. A big part of the trees there are connected with all kinds of ropes and ladders. As a kid I spent a lot of my time high up in the trees so I would have loved a climbing forest!

What was your favourite thing to do as a kid?
As a kid I was a fanatic Illustrator. I drew on anything with a white surface, filling them with my own crazy world. I even filled complete backsides of several wallpaper rolls.

If Mr Maria were to design the ultimate ice cream sundae, what flavour would it be and what would it look like?
Lots of cream, lots of sugar!

The Goo Collection

We are pretty smitten with the gorgeous range of children’s bedding we’ve just discovered from The Goo Collection. Featuring an absolutely delightful assortment of quilts, doona covers, sheets, cushions and knitted blankets your little ones will be running to cozy-up come bed time...

Designed with pretty pastel hues and super cute prints, the range is sure to bring some classic charm to your nursery without feeling overly babyish: “We want our products to look like they fit into every day life around the home and not be overtly whimsical and baby-like,” explains one half of the sister-duo behind the brand, Sally Davies.

But beauty is only one half of the equation when it comes to bedding, it also needs to be soft enough to bundle up little hands, feet and cheeks to get our tick of approval. Luckily everything in The Goo Collection is made with 100% organic cotton making it equally as beautiful to touch and look at.

One of our favourite pieces from the collection is the Oh Deer reversible quilt cover. With contemporary pinks and a delicate touch of wasabi green, its sure to make any girl smile.

Head over to The Goo Collection website to shop the full range.

Hola Nobodinoz

Spanish children’s homewares brand, Nobodinoz, is a factory of creativity. Paying a visit to their gorgeous website makes us feel a bit like Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory…

At first we pause in awe not sure where to dart off to first, but then we quickly transition into a frantic snatching and grabbing state as everything would look so good in our homes.

The range is massive, covering children’s furniture, décor, toys and clothes, which all boast cool on-trend looks and highly practical designs.

We’ve been particularly taken by their stunning range of furniture. The simple Scandi-inspired designs with fun pastel-dipped paintwork are oh so fun and at the very top of our want list.

The entire range appeals just as much to parents as it does to children so we encourage you to head over to their website to check it out for yourself. But allow enough time, you’ll need it.
