If there was ever a brand that made you wish you were a kid again then AKID is it! Created by LA based Ashleigh Dempster, this brand turns today's street trends into incredibly cool footwear for kids. Using on trend fabrications and shapes, we are getting massive small foot envy flicking through their offering...
Described as "one of Toronto’s most exciting and influential women" Ashleigh co-founded The Society Global in 2006, a members-only organization that created art, entertainment, lifestyle and fashion based events across the US and Canada. After the birth of her first child Ashleigh noticed a lack in great footwear for kids, so collaborating with her serial-entrepreneur husband the idea for AKID was born.
Available internationally AKID offers sizes from 2-8 years and has been featured in publications like Women’s Wear Daily, Daily Candy Kids, People Magazine and more. With collections selling like hot cakes we highly recommend getting on the well footed and very cool bandwagon that is AKID.
We talked to Ashleigh about what AKID is all about...
What inspired you to start AKID?
It all came to be when our first born was at an age where he started wearing shoes. My husband (Matt) and I quickly identified a gap in the marketplace for functional yet stylish children’s footwear. With his experience in the industry and my love for shoes, it was just a matter of time that we collaborated on a collection together.
What do you love most about designing footwear for kids?
We have so much fun designing the next collections as you can be super playful with the colors, patterns and textures. Kids look good in everything!
What inspires your designs?
I find inspiration everywhere - my own children, my friend's children, adult style, art exhibits... you name it!
Where are your favourtie places to go in LA with kids?
I love hosting at our house so there is usually a gang of kids running around our backyard. Griffith park has this amazing area with horse and train rides for the kids. Jasper's favourite places to eat are in the garden of Chateau Marmont and the cafe at Fred Segal - both for their pasta!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I think it changed every day. One minute I wanted to be a magazine editor, another minute an architect, then a cartoonist and so on. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!
If AKID were to make the ultimate Milkshake, what flavour would it be?
Triple chocolate with salted caramel sprinkles on top!
